- 13c., from O.Fr. estout "brave, fierce, proud," earlier estolt "strong," from W.Gmc. *stult- "proud, stately" (cf. M.L.G. stolt "stately, proud"). Originally "proud, valiant, strong," the (often euphemistic) meaning "thick-bodied, fat and large" is first recorded 1804. Original sense preserved in stout-hearted.
